Heavy Rain was a success because it was a cohesive long form narrative wrapped in a game mechanic that allowed players to not only see and hear the story, but also feel it. With the release of The Taxidermist Heavy Rain steps out of it’s feature-length skin and tries to deliver an experience more akin to a short story.
There have been many titles before it that have tried to bridge the gap between game and cinema, but with the technological limitations of consoles past Heavy Rain’s graphical realism is ready to pick up the slack where genre predecessors have flopped in to obscurity. With a focus on story and an emphasis on player choice Heavy Rain offers more than the quick-time event filled cinematics you’d expect.
This past Tuesday, Sony invited GeneralGames.ca to come to the Playstation Holiday Preview event in downtown Toronto to check out all the big games coming out this holiday season on the Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable. A lot of major publishers showed up to show off their titles and we got a lot of really great first-hand experience with a lot of the games you’re dying to hear more about.
The Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) is quickly becoming a heavyweight event in the gaming community. With attendance estimates surpassing 60,000 and over 300,000 square feet of convention space packed with nerds of all types, PAX is the largest event organized for gaming fans. Demos, previews and free-play stations from almost every major video game publisher was present showcasing many unreleased titles; Needless to say there was excitement abounding.
