Bizarre, beautiful, and brave. The mixture of Japanese animation and Halo is a lot of things

Bizarre, beautiful, and brave. The mixture of Japanese animation and Halo is a lot of things

Video games and Japanese anime share an odd kinship when it comes to their ostracized place amongst the mainstream. Neither have been fully accepted by popular culture, but both have a rabid and vibrant community that support them, both as artistic mediums and as industries. Halo Legends is the child of these two platforms and brings the American geek face-to-face with the Japanese Otaku in the fist video release for the Halo Franchise.

Half-Life: Escape From City 17The names David and Ian Purchase may not sound familiar and you may not be familiar with their work, but these Torontonian brothers have given game enthusiasts a reason to stand up and take notice. Escape From City 17 is an in-development series of shorts directed and produced by the duo that takes the oppressive environments of Half-Life 2 and brings them to life in a stunning interpretation of the game. An in-depth comparison of the quality of sequels for movies and games.

While this phenomena has been well known to movie-goers since the inception of the sequel, there seems to be a notion in the gaming community that the video game medium is immune to the degradation of quality second and third iterations often bring. GeneralGames.ca has done the incredibly dull task of crunching the numbers to find out the truth behind these notions.

Metropolis (1927), Mass Effect (2007)

A comparison of films and video games at their 30 year mark. Metropolis (1927), Mass Effect (2007)

Video games have had a bad rap for a while as being unrefined and primitive in terms of the sort of emotional experience they can provide their players. I can’t particularly fault these observations, a large majority of games still play to the more base urges of its prime demographic. However my issue lays with the recent comparisons to the video game recently passing its 30th anniversary and how far progressed as an evocative medium films were at the same age.
