Split/Second

Blackrock Studios gives players the ability to dismantle their work, brick by brick

In a world where Michael Bay has an unlimited budget and a reality-TV show of his own, he might come up with something like Split/Second from Disney Interactive Studios, developed by Black Rock Studio. Indeed that’s loosely the premise of the game.  You are a contestant on a television show in which you race against other drivers on a sacrificial race track which is one part urban recreation and two parts obstacle course and all demolition zone. The result is a classic arcade racer feel set in the middle of what can often feel like a war-zone.

What does the future hold for Xbox Live?

Recently Microsoft discontinued Xbox Live service for original Xbox consoles and games. There was commentary that the discontinuation would allow the service to evolve ‘new features and experiences that fully harness the community’ with ‘unprecedented flexibility for future features.’ So now, of course, the speculation follows as to what the future of Xbox Live could hold. In fact this speculation can be extended beyond Xbox Live to other online gaming networks and we can attempt to project the trajectory for the industry.

Fruit Ninja

Bring your ninja fantasies to fruition

Fruit Ninja at it’s core is a very simple game. It’s gameplay can be best described as duck-hunt but with fruit instead of ducks and no annoying dog. Fruit is tossed up in to the air and you, the ninja, must slash it to bits before it falls out of view. It gets progressively harder as more fruit gets added to the mix and the game throws in a few obstacles. If you accidentally hit a bomb when it gets tossed up along with the fruit you lose.

Darwinia+ Darwinia has made it’s presence known on the Xbox Live Arcade in the form of Darwinia+. This game has won multiple awards and received lots of attention in the past in it’s PC incarnations. Introversion Software has now brought it to the console where it is surprisingly easier and more natural to navigate. They even threw in the multiplayer incarnation ‘Multiwinia’ to boot.

The game exists in it’s own little digital Tron-esque universe. It’s an ecosystem populated with industry, civilization, wild life, and various stimuli. It’s a virtual ecosystem where evolution and artificial intelligence is studied. There is even religion as a component to the Darwinian’s lives.

The aesthetic is similarly digital – picture any visualization of computer worlds from the 1980s and you get the idea. It’s a delightful and refreshing aesthetic, both abstract and selectively specific, giving you just the right information with a streamlined yet technical coat of paint. Even the synth’ music harkens back to those glory days.

Canadian Xbox fans love signing red accessories

We at GeneralGames.ca, have been quite active in the Xbox Canada community for a long while and it has really been getting stronger with each year so we thought it would be a great idea to organize a community social. Saturday, November 14th come out to the Strathcona Hotel Bar in downtown Toronto and join us for food and drink. You can meet fellow community members face to face and see where all that trash-talk is coming from. We look forward to seeing you there and there may be some surprises in store. Please RSVP in the comments section and feel free to ask any questions.

Jason

Jason Flemming transforms from everyman to supersoldier in this summer's biggest action platformer

This week sees the release of Shadow Complex for the Xbox Live Arcade developed by Chair Entertainment with help from Epic Games (since it uses the Unreal Engine 3 after all. It’s been highly anticipated for a while now and is part of the much-promoted Xbox Live “Summer of Arcade” avalanche of top tier releases. Its been a relatively dry year for game releases, with downloadable games generally being the most interesting things out there as most retail titles have been waiting for Q4 or have been delayed until 2010. With such a lack of fresh meat, there’s lots of room for a game like Shadow Complex to strut it’s stuff. We’ve already seen the multi-player-only Battlefield 1943 gain huge sales in this industry climate. Now its Shadow Complex’s turn to attempt the same with a purely single player experience.
